7 RUE DE LA POMPE 2012, MAS COUTELOU

7 rue de la pompeThere are many great value wines   from Languedoc-Roussillon , and this is one of them.

Deservedly our wine of the month .Smooth, lush and fruity, displaying that burnt smokiness of Syrah.

Opened up initially to a farmyard nose which soon settled down within  5 minutes of opening .

Good freshness and balance , full of flavour and character . It is an organic and natural wine and was in perfect condition .

Highly recommended and available at www.robersonwine.com for between £10 and £12

Surani Costarossa 2011 Primitivo di Manduria

SuraniA real winter warmer. Most comforting, welcoming and hospitable on a damp winter night.

Inky deep , full bodied , one sip and it invites you  to keep going.

Smooth with sweet spicy fruit and lovely mouth feel

Not the most complex of noses, but I think marvellous value for £8.99 from Majestic.

Would certainly recommend a case , which will go down well with most hearty foods .

Branson Coach House Shiraz Greenock Barossa Valley 2005 South Australia

bchFull on , massive , you can almost chew it.

If you enjoy a blockbuster Barossa Shiraz this is for you. Along the lines of an Amarone.

Delicious , lovely more unidimensional than hoped for but great body , length , intensity which

make it a worthy New Year 2014 wine of the month , though lacking in complexity.

Available via Exelwines and Cellarlink

La Rioja Alta , Vina Arana Reserva 2005

photoRioja seems to be flavour of the month.

This is a fine example from The Wine Society.

Soft tannins ,  spice and cigar box aroma.

Went down so well on Friday night that detailed tasting notes passed us by.

Recommended , plenty of life in it yet.

Followed by the excellent Fattoria Poggiopiano La tradizione.

A good way to start any weekend

Bodegas Muriel Reserva 2008

murielDecanter Rated this outstanding in this months edition.

I was a little disappointed with the first few bottles.

This week I tried a few more . Fantastic. Must have been some bottle variation.

Complex , spicy , smoky nose . long and intriguing finish.

Brilliant value for money.

Available at Majestic

Les Cruelles Lalande de Pomerol 2005 by superb wine maker Denis Durantou famous for L’Eglise Clinet. Humble in comparison to the grand vin this wine delivers way above its price mark especially in a great year like 05. More hedonistic than cerebral but nothing wrong with that. When tried 18 months ago it was closed but is now coming around again. The 09 and 10 were superb at en primeur tastings too…..

Domaine Durieu 2010 Plan De Dieu Cotes Du Rhone Villages

Plan De DieuI was on my way out of Majestic Muswell Hill ,with 18 bottles and no intention to buy more, when I chanced upon this marvel on the counter for tasting.

Rich, spicy , fruity , herbaceous , warm , soft tannins, finesse , smoothness and a certain savoury note.

A really lovely Cotes Du Rhone Villages from an appellation in the centre of Southern Rhone between Chateau Neuf Du Pape and Gigondas.

70% Grenache providing the warm spicy fruit with a touch if Cinsault , Syrah and Mourvedre.

Great value  at £8.99 from Majestic.

Highly recommended and for the price, a steal !

Felton Road Bannockburn 2011

Lovely nose of cherries and burn’t toast. On the palate luscious fruit, with nice backbone, baked fruit pie and long spicey savoury notes. Totally delicious this will no doubt develop over time but it will be hard job not to polish off the whole case long before that!
